Avarine posted a couple of websites on Twitter tonight that not only slightly disturbed me, but got me thinking about why they slightly disturbed me, and realising that I didn’t have a solid foundation for being disturbed.

The sites in question are Spock and PeekYou, and they’re both social networking sites of a kind. Rather than ‘traditional’ networking however, where you create an account on the site to communicate with like-minded friends who also hold membership, you already have an account on both of these sites whether you like it or not.

I came across an IE display issue with my portfolio recently where the divs of the individual projects were ‘staircased’ down the page, with a whitespace break of about half the height of the div between the top of the previous project and the top of the next one. It was irritating, and I couldn’t figure out what was causing it until I examined the source code that the browsers were generating and discovered WordPress was automatically inserting <p> tags around certain other tags (even in HTML view in the visual editor!), which IE was interpreting as whitespace.

A quick bit of googling came up with a couple of different solutions which I’ve listed below.

Solution from AVG:

• Open the AVG user interface (i.e. double-click on the icon in your system tray).
• Click on the ‘Tools’ menu, then click on ‘Advanced settings’.
• Click on the ‘Manage’ tab at the bottom of the list, then click ‘Revert virus database to previous version’. This should solve the issue and allow you to open iTunes.
• If you have moved the ‘infected’ files to the virus vault, you will need to restore them before iTunes will run. If you have deleted them from the vault, you will need to reinstall iTunes.
